MiVideo: Import Media Gallery From a Previous Course in Canvas

Issue

How to import media and playlists from one course Media Gallery into another. Importing a course Media Gallery saves time over selecting individual media files to add to a new course.

Note: the Canvas course copy tool will not copy over the Media Gallery. The following steps must be performed separately. However, media embedded into course content (for example a video embedded onto a page) and copied from a previous course via the Canvas course copy/import tool will become associated with the new course and will be accessible to anyone enrolled in the new course.

Possible Importing Issues

• If you only see "Faculty Shared Repository" as an option to import from, see Importing MiVideo Media Gallery In Canvas Displays Empty List Or Faculty Shared Repository Only article.
• If you see the error message "Oops, it appears you do not have manager permissions" see the Importing Media Gallery In Canvas Displays "Oops, it appears you do not have manager permissions..." article.
• You may not see the course you are looking for if you are enrolled in more than 100 Canvas courses (enrolled with any role, not just the Teacher or TA role).  The Media Gallery import will only display 100 courses.  If this occurs please place a ticket with the ITS Service Center stating which course to import the Media Gallery from and which course to import into. 
• There is a 10 playlist limit when importing media from a Media Gallery. If you have more than 10 playlists in the Media Gallery you import from, none of the playlists will be recreated. See the Imported Media Gallery Does Not Contain Playlists article.

How to Import a Media Gallery from Another Course

Resolution

You do not need to be the media owner or co-publisher to import media into the Media Gallery. You must however be a teacher, TA, or instructional designer for both courses.

1. Navigate to the course to import to > Media Gallery > Channel Actions  > Import.

Tip: If this is a new course with no media, you can use the quick link, found below the filter options, to import content from another Media Gallery.

2. Select the course name from which to import from and click Import. If you do not see the course you want to import from, verify the course has media in the Media Gallery then check the possible importing issues listed in the section above.

Note: It could take several minutes to import all of the media, depending on the size of the Media Gallery. A message at the top of the screen will alert you when Importing completed successfully. Importing runs in the background so you can safely navigate away from the Media Gallery once the Importing Started Successfully message clears.

3. Click "click here" when the message appears to refresh the Media Gallery. The gallery now shows the media and playlists from the other course Media Gallery.

4. Media can now be removed and additional media added as needed:

   • Remove Media from a Canvas Course Media Gallery

   • Add Media to a Course Media Gallery in Canvas
