Sleep in the Wild: Using Sleep Data from Mobile Devices in Studies
Presented on November 7, 2022 by Dr. Cathy Goldstein, M.D., M.S.
In this DIGIT-MI session, Dr. Cathy Goldstein, M.D., M.S., outlines the need for objective, longitudinal sleep tracking for research and clinical applications, the limitations of currently accepted sleep tracking methods, and the pros and cons of tracking sleep with consumer-facing technologies.
Dr. Goldstein is a Professor of Neurology at the University of Michigan Sleep Disorders Center, where she cares for patients with various conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, and circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, as well as participating in the training of future sleep physicians. Dr. Goldstein is also the Faculty Lead for the Mobile Technologies Core at the Eisenberg Family Depression Center, and leads the Mobile Technologies Research Innovation Collaborative (MeTRIC).

Working with Industry to Enhance Digital and Mobile Technology Studies

Working with industry is a complimentary partner to U-M researchers and can establish a competitive advantage in securing research funding for future studies. Despite these potential benefits, it can be difficult to understand the process and procedures necessary to operationalize these win-win opportunities. In this session, Mike Ranella, M.B.A, M.P.H., and Drew Bennett provide high-level insight to investigators looking to work with industry involving digital & mobile technologies. The session covers a wide range of topics including procurement vs. sponsored research contracting, budgeting, data use, and security to name a few. Viewers will learn about resources available to help them execute their research studies in this growing space.

Mobile Data Applications in Mental Health Studies

In this session, Yu Fang, M.S.E., reviews multiple projects utilizing mobile data in the Intern Health Study, a prospective cohort study of stress and depression during first-year medical residency training. Through the presentation, data best practices for studies with mobile technologies will be discussed.

Using Mobile Apps and Wearable Devices to Study Human Health and Well-Being

In this session, Dr. Sung Won Choi, M.D., M.S., and Dr. Muneesh Tewari, M.D., Ph.D., provide an overview of several recent mobile technologies projects and address their purposes/questions. The projects reviewed utilize several types of mobile technologies, including continuous temperature monitoring and a mHealth platform that offers mental health support. Strategies and best practices for using mobile apps and wearable devices to study health and well-being are discussed.
Dr. Choi is a Edith S Briskin and Shirley K Schlafer Foundation Research Professor of Pediatrics in the Blood and Marrow Transplantation Program at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. Dr. Tewari is a Ray and Ruth Anderson-Laurence Sprague Memorial Research Professor, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School.

Using Mobile Apps to Deliver Mental Health Interventions

In this session, Amy Bohnert, Ph.D., M.H.S, reviews and discusses the U-M PROMPT Precision Health Study, which involves the use of mobile apps and wearables to address mental health symptoms in patients who are waiting for clinic-based care.
Amy S.B. Bohnert, Ph.D., M.H.S. is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Michigan Medicine, and is a mental health services researcher with training in public health who focuses her research on epidemiology and brief interventions regarding substance use and related disorders.

Danielle S. Taubman, MPH joined the Eisenberg Family Depression Center in 2015 as a technical writer. In her current role as a project manager, she has a project portfolio supporting initiatives and needs across the Center. In particular, she works on strategic planning; develops educational materials, including courses, conferences, speaker series, and trainings; and evaluates and documents EFDC programs. Danielle is a co-facilitator for DIGIT-MI, a group that showcases leaders in mobile technologies research and encourages the increased use of these technologies in health research across multiple disciplines. She also proudly serves as a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) lead for the EFDC’s DEI Committee.
