Create a Google Shared Drive


U-M Google shared drives


Obtaining a Google shared drive (formerly known as Team Drive)


  1. Connect to Google Drive
    1. Go directly to -or-
    2. Choose Drive from the Google Apps Launcher
  2. Right click on Shared drives (listed beneath My Drive in the left hand bar)
  3. Click the New Shared Drive option to create your shared drive
    1. Follow any resulting prompts or instruction

We recommend that each Google shared drive be named according to your Active Directory prefix or generally recognized prefix. (EXAMPLE: ULIB | Special Collections Inventory or Alumni | Class of 1990 Reunion)

Note: When moving files from Google My Drive to a new shared drive, you can move individual files, but entire folders cannot currently be moved over. You must open each folder first and transfer the files themselves.

Additional Information

As of March 18, 2019, any U-M Google account is able to create a Google shared drive without having to request one from ITS.
