Issue

How do I create a Google shared drive?

Resolution

  • As of January 3, 2023, Google shared drives must be created using the ITS Shared Drive Manager tool.
  • Refer to Shared Drives in U-M Google full instructions on creating a shared drive, including information on sharing/permissions, ownership requirements, annual renewal processes, and best practices.
  • You will use the ITS Shared Drive Manager tool to manage certain aspects of your shared drive, including adding/removing Managers, renewing the drive every year, and renaming the drive.
  • Only active faculty, staff, and students are eligible to create shared drives. Sponsored affiliates, temporary staff, alumni, retirees, Shared Accounts, MCommunity groups, friend accounts, and external (non-UM) users are not eligible to create shared drives.
  • On average, it takes about four hours for the shared drive to appear in your Google Drive after submitting the creation form. However, it may take up to 24 hours in some cases.
