Access Virtual Sites (Legacy - midesktop.umich.edu)

Environment

midesktop.umich.edu, University of Michigan Virtual Sites

Issue

For individuals wanting to use Campus Computing Sites software from a location other than the physical Sites.

Resolution

1. Connect using a web browser to http://midesktop.umich.edu
2. Select from the two options, depending on your choice
   • Install VMWare Horizon Client 
     • Installs software on your computer
       • After that first time, you can just use the client to connect to midesktop.umich.edu
   • VMWare Horizon HTML Access
     • Use this every time, if you choose the web/HTML option
3. Choose your software set
   • Choose "Virtual Sites" for:
     • Off campus connections, even with VPN
     • Dearborn or Flint community members

Important Notes

• Duo Two-Factor Authentication is required for all Virtual Sites users as of June 16, 2021. This enhances security and protects user and session data as per Safe Computing directives. Safe Computing Duo page: https://safecomputing.umich.edu/two-factor-authentication
• Local printing and local storage is not recommended when using Virtual Sites

Additional Information

Legacy Virtual Sites will be retired on 11/30. Users will no longer be able to access midesktop.umich.edu after that time. All Virtual Sites use will go through virtualsites.umich.edu
