Issue

How do I transfer ownership of shared Dropbox folders?

Resolution

To transfer ownership of a shared Dropbox folder:

  1. Hover over the folder that needs ownership changed:
    • In list view, click the share icon Sharing icon
    • In grid view, click Share
  2. Click the blue "Who can access" text link in the upper left under the folder name. A list of people shared will appear.
  3. Click the drop-down menu to the right of the person you wish to make the new owner.
    • If the person does not appear on the list, the owner will need to invite the person first
  4. Select Make owner.
  5. Click Make owner to confirm.

If you have multiple files and folders that need to be transferred, refer to Article ID: 11104 to learn more about using Dropbox Transfer to transfer ownership.

Additional Information

This does not apply to Dropbox Team Folders.

  • If you want to change the owner of the MCommunity group, which owns the Team Folder, you should do so via MCommunity by changing the owners of the group.
  • If you want to change the MCommunity group that owns the Team Folder (i.e., change the managing group to a different MComm group), you need to submit a ticket to the ITS Service Center.

If there are subfolders, changing the owner of the top parent folder will also change the ownership of the subfolders.
