Issue
How to order professional human-generated or machine-generated language translation captions for media in Canvas and MiVideo Mediaspace.
Media must be uploaded to your My Media in Canvas or Mediaspace to use this service.
Closed captions, audio descriptions, and audio language translation (dubbing) are separate services; see the Order Captions for Media, Audio Descriptions (AD) for Media and Audio Language Translation for Media articles.

Viewing Language Captions in the Kaltura Media Player
Once language captions are added to a recording, viewers will have the option to enable and select captions in the media player by clicking the closed captions icon.

Professional Language Translation Captions/Transcript
Currently, Kaltura contracts with DotSub to generate professional language translations. This is a premium fee-based service. It is not free. Professional language translations can be ordered with a shortcode. Please complete the MiVideo Captioning, Transcription & Audio Description Request Form.
- Professional translations can be ordered for most languages
- Price is per translation language. See the ordering form for estimated costs
- Turnaround time is best effort (up to 5 business days; media duration affects actual turnaround time)
Ordering Professional Language Translation Captions
- Media must be uploaded to your My Media in Canvas or Mediaspace to use this service
- Translation requests produce caption and searchable and interactive transcript files
- The cost is based on the length of the recording rounded up the next minute (not the number of minutes of audio that need translated)
- For example, a recording with a length of 10 minutes and 1 second will be charged for 11 minutes
- The recording length can be edited down as necessary, see the Utilizing Video Editor article
- The ITS-MiVideo team will need a shortcode and authorized signer approval to place the order
- The ITS-MiVideo team will email the requester once the order is completed
Machine Language Translation Captions/Transcript
Currently, Kaltura contracts with DotSub to generate machine language translations. This is a premium fee-based service. It is not free. Machine-generated language translations can be ordered with a shortcode. Please complete the MiVideo Captioning, Transcription & Audio Description Request Form.
- High quality English text captions are required for machine translation
- Machine translations can be ordered for most languages
- Machine-generated English captions can be ordered for English source media, however these captions are not always accurate and will need to be edited for accuracy before ordering translations
- If you don’t have English captions, first order and edit captions in English before ordering the translation
- Flat rate fee per translation language. See the ordering form for costs (for details, select the 'No' option under 'Did you receive an official accommodation letter from the Disabilities Office (SSD)?')
- Turnaround time is up to one hour
