Transferring files between two MiWorkspace Windows computers as part of a refresh or replacement process.

Resolution

MiWorkspace provides the PC Mover tool for customers to transfer files between two MiWorkspace Windows computers as part of a machine Refresh or replacement process.

Whether you are working off-campus or on-campus, PC Mover allows you to transfer your data to a new or replacement machine at a time that is convenient for you.

How to Use PC Mover from Off-Campus

Customers working remotely who receive their new replacement device at home can use PC Mover to transfer their data. This process uses your home network (ethernet or WiFi).

  1. Log on to both the old and the new computers with your uniqname and UMICH (Level-1) password.
Note: If you’re at home, and the new device was just shipped to you, make sure that you have completed the MiWorkspace: Windows Setup @Home process first.
  1. On the old computer, follow the instructions to Prepare Data for Transfer to a New MiWorkspace Computer
  2. Open Software Center on both machines and search for “PC Mover”.
  3. Install the appropriate application for both machines, and wait for both packages to finish installing:
  • Install the PC Mover Source application on the old (source) computer.
  • Install the PC Mover Destination application on the new (destination) computer.
  1. Both computers must be restarted after the applications are installed. After restarting, log back in to both computers.
  2. Ensure that both computers are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
Note: It is NOT recommended to perform the data transfer using a public WiFi network as it will not be as secure or stable as a home network.
  1. Open the newly created PC Mover shortcut on each computer's desktop and enter your UMICH (Level-1) password, then click OK to approve the User Account Control (UAC) prompt that displays.
  2. From the new (destination) computer, click Next to search for the source computer.
  3. Once the source computer is detected on the new computer, click Analyze PC to allow the new (destination) computer to gather information about the size and scope of the data transfer.
  4. After the analysis has completed, click View Details to review what will be transferred and include or exclude specific files and/or folders.
  5. When ready, click Start Transfer on the new (destination) computer to begin the transfer.
  6. When the transfer has completed, it is recommended to click the Restart PC to apply changes (Recommended) checkbox and click Finish to finalize the transfer process.
  7. Once the destination computer has restarted, you should be able to log in and see the transferred files. Check to ensure all needed files and settings are present.
  8. After you have verified your data on the new machine, open Software Center on the new computer and click Installation Status. Select the installed version of PC Mover from the list, click Uninstall, and reboot the computer when prompted to remove the application.

How to Use PC Mover from On-Campus

Customers who receive a new replacement machine on-campus have the option to work with Neighborhood IT during the Day 1 visit to help set up and transfer data to the new device. However, if you choose to perform the data transfer on your own, you can use PC Mover at a time that is convenient for you. Neighborhood IT will leave a Thunderbolt cable with you to use during the data transfer process.
