Issue

How can students use the Google LTIs in Canvas?

Resolution

Embed a file as an assignment submission when submission type = text entry

  1. On the assignment submission page click the Apps icon in the Rich Content Editor.
  2. Select Google Drive (LTI 1.3). If you don't see it in the list click View All.
  3. If you are not already logged into Google you will be prompted to Sign In. Login with your Umich credentials.
  4. If you are already logged in, click Select file.
  5. Locate the file in your Drive or upload a new file.
  6. Click Add.
  7. When notified that Attaching this file will change the sharing setting and allow anyone with the link to access it, click Attach.

Upload a file as an assignment submission when submission type = file upload

  1. On the assignment submission page either select the Google Drive (LTI 1.3) tab or click the triple dots and select Google assignments LTI 1.3 (the options vary depending on if your instructor has enabled Assignment Enhancements for the course).
  2. If you are not already logged into Google you will be prompted to Sign In. Login with your Umich credentials.
  3. If you are already logged in, click Select file.
  4. Locate the file in your Drive or upload a new file.
  5. Click Add.
  6. When notified that Attaching this file will change the sharing setting and allow anyone with the link to access it, click Attach.

Attach a file as an assignment submission when submission type = Google Assignment

  1. On the assignment submission page click Load Google Assignment LTI using the LTI in a new window
  2. If you are not already logged into Google you will be prompted to Sign In. Login with your Umich credentials.
  3. Click Link
  4. When notified to link your account, click Link
  5. Either add a file to select a file from your Google drive or create a new doc, sheet or slide
  6. Click Submit

Collaborate on a Google file

Create a collaboration in Groups

  1. From within your course group, select Collaborations from the left navigation
  2. Start a new collaboration
    • The options will be different depending on if your teacher has enabled External Collaborations Tools in the course
    • Click Start a New Collaboration
      1. If you are not already logged into Google you will be prompted to Sign In. Login with your Umich credentials.
      2. If you are already logged in, click the Collaboration using dropdown and select Google Assignments (LTI 1.3)
    • Click +Collaboration > Google Assignments (LTI 1.3)
      1. If you are not already logged into Google you will be prompted to Sign In. Login with your Umich credentials.  
  3. Give the collaboration a title and select a file type, the description is optional
  4. Select the students who will be collaborating together
  5. Click Create
  6. When asked to confirm the file be created, click Create
