U-M Slack: Workspace Settings & Administration

U-M Slack

How do I access the settings and management tools for my U-M Slack workspace?

Workspace Admins can modify the settings for a workspace and perform administrative tasks, such as managing members and channels, from the Workspace Settings & Administration page. Please follow the instructions below for accessing the Workspace Settings & Administration page:

  1. Click the "Workspace Name" at the top of the sidebar where the channels are listed. (i.e., top-left corner of Slack)
  2. Hover over "Settings & administration" from the menu that appears
(If you do not see the "Settings & administration" option, then you're not a Workspace Admin for the current workspace you're in.)
  3. Select "Workspace settings" from the additional menu that appears
  4. The "Workspace Settings & Permissions" page will open in a web browser
  5. The Workspace settings can be modified, among other administrative tasks that can be performed by selecting the appropriate setting from the list on the left-side of the page

If you're a "Workspace Admin" for multiple U-M Slack Workspaces, then you can switch the workspace your viewing the settings for by clicking the "Workspaces" icon in the top-right corner of the screen between "Plans" and "Help." You can also open the workspace in Slack and perform the same steps shown above.

Additional Information

The different settings and management tasks are outlined at https://slack.com/help/categories/200122103-Workspace-administration, but please note that some of the settings listed cannot be altered in U-M Slack.

Alternative access methods for the Workspace Settings & Administration page:

  • The Workspace Settings & Administration page can be accessed directly by going to https://slack.com/account/workspace-settings in a web browser if currently signed in to U-M Slack
    • After doing so, you may need to select the appropriate workspace you want to manage.
  • You also can append "/admin" to the end of your workspace URL (e.g., umich-all.slack.com/admin) to access the Workspace Settings & Administration page
Note: The workspace URL will be listed directly under the workspace name after clicking it in step #1. It's also listed under the workspace name after clicking on it to view details on the "Workspaces at University of Michigan" page at https://slack.umich.edu/.
