Slack: Workspace Settings and Administration

Environment

U-M Slack

Issue

How do I access the settings and management tools for my U-M Slack workspace?

Resolution

Workspace Admins can modify the settings for a workspace and perform administrative tasks, such as managing members and channels. Please follow the instructions below for accessing these settings:

  1. Click University of Michigan at the top of the left channel sidebar.
  2. Hover over Tools & settings in the drop-down menu and select Workspace settings.
    • If you do not find the Workspace settings option, then you're not a Workspace Admin in any U-M Slack workspace.
  3. Select the relevant workspace from the drop-down and click Open. The "Settings & Permissions" page will open in a new browser window.
    • If you do not find the workspace you are looking for in the drop-down, then you're not a Workspace Admin in that workspace.

The workspace settings can be modified, among other administrative tasks that can be performed by selecting the appropriate tab under Settings & Permissions or selecting a different administrative option from the left side of the page.

Additional Information

The different settings and management tasks are listed in the Slack Help Center under Workspace administration, but please note that some of the settings listed cannot be altered in U-M Slack.

Alternative access methods for the Settings & Administration page:

  • Go to https://slack.com/account/workspace-settings in a web browser if currently signed in to U-M Slack.
    • After doing so, you may need to select the appropriate workspace you want to manage: Click Workspaces in the top right corner and select the relevant workspace.
  • Append "/admin/settings" to the end of your workspace URL (e.g., umich-all.slack.com/admin/settings) in a web browser and press Enter.
