Issue
How do I change my full name in Slack? Can I change my display name?
Resolution
In U-M Slack, there are two names associated with your account: Full Name and Display Name.
Full Name
By default, Slack uses your Preferred Name from the official university record as your Full Name in Slack. If there is no Preferred Name set, Slack uses the Primary Name from the university records. (Refer to The U-M Preferred Name Policy and Your Directory Entry for more information on Preferred Names.)
If you would like to set your Preferred Name in your official university record, follow the steps below.
Reminder: Changing your Preferred Name will also change your name in all university services that pull from MCommunity - like, U-M Google, Dropbox, and Zoom.
- All University Employees, Any Campus (including student temps): In Wolverine Access, navigate to Employee Self Service > Campus Personal Information > Names > Update or Add a preferred name; you may then immediately proceed to Step 2
- Ann Arbor Students: In Wolverine Access, navigate to Student Business > Campus Personal Information > Names > Update or Add a preferred name; you may then immediately proceed to Step 2
- Flint students: Refer to U-M Flint's Preferred Name Info and WAIT to continue to Step 2 until after 2 p.m. or 2 a.m., whichever comes first (data is synced twice daily from Flint Banner to MCommunity at 2 p.m. and 2 a.m.)
- Dearborn Students: Refer to U-M Dearborn's Preferred Name Info and WAIT to continue to Step 2 until after 8 a.m. (data is synced once daily from Dearborn Banner to MCommunity at 8 a.m.)
Check your profile in MCommunity to make sure that the name that shows at the top of MCommunity is the name you want to see in Slack.
Your U-M data is synced to Slack every time you log in to the service. To ensure this happens correctly, use an incognito/private browser window to log in to Slack. It is important to do this in a browser window as opposed to the desktop app. Your name should then change in the desktop app once completed.
If you don't see the updated name next time you open U-M Slack using the Slack desktop app, sign out and back in using the desktop app to sync your name. Follow the steps in Installing and Signing In to Slack on Your Device to sign back into U-M Slack from the desktop app.
Display Name
Full Name is not the same as Display Name. Your Display Name is your uniqname and cannot be changed. Learn more about Slack display names.
