Issue

How do I upload or edit closed captions to my video?

Resolution

The Captions tab on the Edit Media page allows you to upload your own closed caption files or edit existing captions. To order captions and transcripts, see the Order Captions article for more information.

Notes:

  • To edit a media item you have to be the media owner or co-editor of the content. See the Media Collaboration and Roles article for information about ownership
  • The editing tabs may vary depending on your role
  • To edit the media file (trim, chop, splice, copy, and add hotspots and Interactive Video Quizzes) see the Video Editor articles
  1. Navigate to the Edit Media page:
    • Canvas: Account > My Media > pencil icon next to the media item
      • or from the Media page, click Actions > Edit
    • MiVideo Mediaspace: user drop-down menu > My Media > pencil icon next to the media item
      • or from the Media page, click Actions > Edit
  2. Select the Captions tab

Notes:

  • If the media item is an image or audio file the Captions tab won’t be displayed
  • The system supports SRT captions file format
  • You can upload more than one caption file. For example, you may have captions in more than one language
  1. To edit a caption file, click Edit Captions. See the Edit Captions article
  2. To upload a caption file, click Upload captions file and select your SRT file
  3. Choose the language the caption file is in from the Language drop-down box
  4. Enter the text Label (usually the same as Language) that will display in the video player
  5. Click Save
  6. Once captions are added to a video, viewers will have the option to enable captions in the video player by clicking the closed captions "CC" icon

You can use the icons next to each caption to manage that file:

  • Check mark icon: Set the default caption (important when you have more than one caption file)
  • Pencil icon: Edit the language and/or label
  • "X" icon: Delete the caption file
  • Down arrow icon: Download the file to your computer
  • Player icon: By default captions are displayed on the video. Clicking this icon removes captions from the video and strikes out the icon
