Environment

Google Chat

Issue

How do I turn off Google Chat notifications so I'm not alerted every time someone messages me?

Resolution

Refer to the Google Help Center for detailed information on turning off or muting your Chat notifications on the web, in Gmail, and in the Chat mobile app.

Turn off notifications in Google Chat on the web (chat.google.com)

  1. Go to Google Chat.
  2. Click Settings (gear icon) in the top right corner.
  3. Uncheck the Allow chat notifications box under "Desktop notifications."

Turn off Google Chat notifications in Gmail (mail.umich.edu)

  1. Go to Gmail.
  2. Click Settings (gear icon) and select See all settings.
  3. Click the Chat and Meet tab.
  4. Click Manage chat settings next to Chat notifications settings.
  5. Uncheck the Allow chat notifications box under "Desktop notifications."

Mute your notifications

You can also temporarily mute notifications on all your devices in Google Chat on the web (chat.google.com) or Gmail instead of turning them off completely.

From either chat.google.com or Gmail:

  1. Click the down arrow next to your status indicator in the top right corner.
  2. Select Do not disturb.
  3. Select a duration from the list or select Until a specific time.
  4. Click Set.

Tip: Notifications automatically turn back on after the mute duration expires.
