Not Receiving Google Chat Notifications

Environment

Google Chat, desktop computer

Issue

I am not receiving Chat notifications and would like to. 

Resolution

Note: Email reminders apply to messages that you haven't read after 12 hours. They are not sent for @mentions.

Check Chat notification settings

Website and Desktop App

1. Open Chat
2. At the top right, click Settings  > Settings
3. Under Web and desktop, Mobile, and Email, make sure notifications are on
4. Close Settings
5. Next to a person or room, point to Notifications off and click More. Then select Turn on notifications
6. Make sure you didn't snooze notifications

Gmail Chat

1. Open the Gmail Chat and Meet settings
2. Click the "Manage chat settings" button. (Note: This is only an option if the Chat window is enabled in Gmail.)
3. Ensure "Allow chat notifications", "Open chat pop-ups for new messages", and "Play notifications sounds" is enabled.
4. Click the "Show an example" button to show a test notification. (Note: This button is only available if all other Google Chat windows are closed.)
   1. Clear cache & cookies if the test notification appears, but chat notifications are still not being received.
   2. If the test notification doesn't appear, proceed to checking computer and browser notification settings below. 

Check computer notification settings

Apple Mac

1. In the top left, click Apple > System Preferences > Notifications
2. On the left menu, locate and click Chat
3. Select an alert style and other notification settings

Microsoft Windows

1. In the Windows search box, enter Notifications and select Notifications & actions
2. Under Notifications, select Get notifications from apps and other senders and any other options

Check browser notification settings

Note: Notifications won't show in the navigation bar

Chrome Browser

1. On the left side of the address bar, click Secure > Site Settings > Notifications
2. Click Down arrow  > Allow

Mozilla Firefox

1. At the top, in the blue banner, click Turn on desktop notifications
2. Click Allow Notifications

Apple Safari

1. At the top, in the blue banner, click Turn on desktop notifications
2. Click Allow
