Issue
How do I change my pronouns in Google/Slack/Zoom/Canvas?
Resolution
Several ITS services allow users to change their pronouns, and each has to be updated manually per service. The information below provides instructions for changing or updating your pronouns in Google, Slack, Zoom, and Canvas.
Google
- Go to your Google Account personal info page and log in with U-M Weblogin if prompted.
- Click the Pronouns row under Basic info.
- Select from the list of pronoun suggestions or click Add custom pronouns to add your own.
- If adding custom pronouns, enter them in the text field that appears and click Save.
- You can also choose not to have pronouns appear by selecting No pronouns set from the list (which is the default for all U-M Google accounts).
- Select how you'd like your pronouns shared in Google under "Choose who can see your pronouns."
- Only you: Your pronouns are private, and you can only view them.
- Your organization: Your pronouns are visible to every person within U-M Google.
- Anyone: Anyone can view your pronouns when they communicate with you or view the content you create in Google.
If you display your pronouns in Google, they’ll appear when someone views your contact info or hovers over your profile picture in Gmail, Chat, or other Google products. They’ll only appear next to your picture in Google Meet if you have access set to Anyone and you're using Meet on the web (mobile users won't be able to view anyone's pronouns). (Pronouns will appear in the language they were set, regardless of current language settings.) Refer to the Google Help Center for more information.
Slack
- Open U-M Slack and log in with U-M Weblogin if prompted.
- Click your profile picture in the bottom left corner (desktop) or top right corner (mobile).
- Select Profile (desktop) or View profile (mobile).
- Click Edit beside your name (desktop) or Edit Profile (mobile).
- Enter your pronouns in the text field under Pronouns.
- Click Save Changes (desktop) or Save (mobile).
Your pronouns will now appear on your Slack profile card.
Zoom
- Go to U-M Zoom and log in with U-M Weblogin if prompted.
- Click Edit to the right of your name.
- Enter your pronouns in the text field under Pronouns.
- Select how you'd like your pronouns to be shared in Zoom under "How would you like to share your pronouns?"
- Always share in meetings and webinars: Your pronouns will appear next to your display name automatically in any meetings that you host or join, as well as any webinars for which you’re the host or panelist.
- Ask me every time after joining meetings and webinars: You will be asked if you want your pronouns to appear next to your display name in every meeting you host or join, as well as any webinars for which you’re the host or panelist.
- Do not share in meetings and webinars: Your pronouns will not appear next to your display name in any meetings or webinars. You will have to manually choose to share your pronouns. (Even if you choose not to share your pronouns in meetings or webinars, your pronouns will still appear in your profile card and be visible to your Zoom contacts if you have entered them in the Pronouns field.)
- Click Save.
