Issue
The MiVideo player upgrade in Canvas was completed on August 19, 2024.
Instructors are encouraged to review embedded videos for upcoming courses. In most cases, no action will be necessary. See fixes for possible issues below.
Resolution
What's new and different?
- The new player is more modern, and accessible, and offers a better overall user experience. (Thank you to the ITS Accessibility team for your extensive testing!)
- A more consistent look and feel:
- Player plugins that add additional functionality (search/navigation, transcript, playlist, download, info) to the player are grouped together in the top right of the player
- Plugins either open in the right side panel or overlay the video
When the side panel is open, the video is re-sized to fit within the player dimensions leading to more uniform embed sizes in Canvas content
- Settings are grouped together under the "gear" icon
Speed, quality, captions, and audio selections are grouped together and better labeled
- New features:
- Download plugin
- Allows the viewer to download attachments (if any) added to the video
- Attachments are now accessible from embedded videos
- Information plugin
- Displays metadata for the video including title, description, and owner
- This info is now accessible from embedded videos
- Timestamped transcript
Allows the viewer to jump to a specific point in the video
- Media Gallery playlist countdown
Ten seconds before a video ends, a countdown popup appears in the lower right corner announcing the next video in the playlist

How will this affect my Canvas course?
- Embedding video into Canvas content workflow will not change
- The new player appears in the Media Gallery and new content embeds in Canvas
- Most players used in existing embeds were upgraded on August 19, 2024
- The new player has different dimensions and not all players are being upgraded - see fixes to common issues below
