Qualtrics Connector for Canvas: Setting a Qualtrics Survey to be used in Canvas (Calculate a Score in Qualtrics )

Environment

Issue

How do I set a Qualtrics Survey that uses scored questions in Qualtrics to determine the score passed to Canvas?

Resolution

NOTE: After respondents complete a Qualtrics survey in Canvas, they will not be able to see the Qualtrics Survey questions and their results in Canvas; only the score received for completing the survey. Given this limitation, it is recommended not to use the Qualtrics Connector for graded assessments in credit-bearing courses.

Qualtrics supports the ability to set a point value (scoring) for certain question types. A Qualtrics survey that uses the score functionality can be used with the Qualtrics Connector after the survey is modified using the instructions below.

  1. In order to set up a grade score, you will need to 1) set up a scoring category and 2) score your questions
    1. You can do this by clicking on this link: How to Set Up a Scoring Category in Qualtrics
  2. Once you have completed step 1, you can then navigate to your survey
  3. Under the Survey bar, there are 5 icons
    1. Click the second icon labeled Survey Flow
  4. Underneath the gray box labeled Show Block: Default Question Block, click the green label: + Add a New Element Here
    1. You should now see a yellow box asking you what you would like to add
  5. Click the light green button that has a green box with the letters ED and is labeled Embedded Data
    1. Now you should see a green box labeled Set Embedded Data underneath the gray box labeled Show Block: Default Question Block
  6. Next, you should clear the text box and type Score
    1. Proceed to click the blue words Set a Value Now
  7. Click the dropdown button of Custom Value and select Insert Piped Text
  8. Click Score from the list of options
  9. Click Score again from the options
    1. Now, you should see “score” equal to some gibberish
    2. This gibberish is your scoring
    3. Proceed to click the green label: + Add a New Element Here
  10. Click the red button that has a caution sign and is labeled End of Survey
    1. Now you should see a red box with a caution sign labeled “End of Survey” underneath the gray box labeled Show Block: Default Question Block
  11. Click the Customize option within that red box
    1. Check the Override Survey Options box to customize the survey
  12. Select the Redirect to URL option
    1. Now it will ask you to insert a URL
  13. Type: ${e://Field/return_url}?Score=${e://Field/score}&MaxScore=100 into the URL box
    1. If your score is not out of 100 points, change it from the URL link, to however many points you designed the survey to be
  14. When finished, click the green ✔️OK button at the bottom right corner
  15. After clicking ✔️OK , you should see a check mark next to the Customize option
  16. Click the blue button at the bottom right corner of your screen labeled Apply

If you will be including student identifying data from Canvas in the survey, you will also need to follow the steps below to collect that data in your Qualtrics survey.

  1. Navigate to your Qualtrics Survey from the Qualtrics Home Page
  2. Under the Survey bar, there are 5 icons
    1. Click the second icon labeled Survey Flow
  3. Underneath the gray box labeled Show Block: Default Question Block, click the green label: + Add a New Element Here
    1. You should now see a yellow box asking you what you would like to add
  4. Click the green button that is labeled Embedded Data
    1. A green box labeled Set Embedded Data appears underneath the gray box labeled Show Block: Default Question Block
  5. In the text field labeled Create New Field or Choose From Dropdown... enter the student data that you will include from Canvas.  If you are adding more than one type of data, click Add a New Field to get the next empty field.
    1. For the student's email address, enter user_email
    2. For the student's ID from the student information system, enter sis_user_id
    3. For an internal tracking number generated by the Qualtrics Connector, enter user_id
