Qualtrics Connector for Canvas: Setting a Qualtrics Survey to be Used in Canvas (Participation Score)

Issue

How do I set a Qualtrics survey as a participation score in Canvas?

Resolution

After a student completes the survey, a completion score (participation) or a performance score (grade) will be passed into the Canvas Gradebook. Students who receive a participation score will receive a 100%.  If your survey is not out of 100 points, you can change it when customizing the survey. 

  1. Navigate to your Qualtrics Survey from the Qualtrics Home Page
  2. Under the Survey bar, there are 5 icons
    1. Click the second icon labeled Survey Flow
  3. Underneath the gray box labeled Show Block: Default Question Block, click the green label: + Add a New Element Here
    1. You should now see a yellow box asking you what you would like to add
  4. Click the red button that has a caution sign and is labeled End of Survey

  5. Click the Customize option within that red box
    1. You will have to check the Override Survey Options box in order to customize the survey
  6. Once you have checked the override box, select the Redirect to URL option
  7. Now when you are asked to insert a URL, enter: ${e://Field/return_url}?Score=100&MaxScore=100 into the URL box (be sure to remove the default http:// text in this box).
  8. When finished, click the green ✔️OK button at the bottom right corner
  9. After clicking “✔️OK”, you should see a check mark next to the Customize option
    1. The change has been indicated
  10. Click the blue button at the bottom right corner of your screen labeled Apply

If you will be including student identifying data from Canvas in the survey, you will also need to follow the steps below to collect that data in your Qualtrics survey. 

  1. Navigate to your Qualtrics Survey from the Qualtrics Home Page
  2. Under the Survey bar, there are 5 icons
    1. Click the second icon labeled Survey Flow
  3. Underneath the gray box labeled Show Block: Default Question Block, click the green label: + Add a New Element Here
    1. You should now see a yellow box asking you what you would like to add
  4. Click the green button that is labeled Embedded Data
    1. A green box labeled Set Embedded Data appears underneath the gray box labeled Show Block: Default Question Block
  5. In the text field labeled Create New Field or Choose From Dropdown... enter the student data that you will include from Canvas.  If you are adding more than one type of data, click Add a New Field to get the next empty field.
    1. For the student's email address, enter user_email 
    2. For the student's ID from the student information system, enter sis_user_id
    3. For an internal tracking number generated by the Qualtrics Connector, enter user_id
  6. Once you have added the field(s), click and hold the word Move to drag the Set Embedded Data box above the gray box labeled Show Block: Default Question Block, so that it is at the top of the workflow. 
  7. Click the blue button at the bottom right corner of your screen labeled Apply
  8. Click Survey to return to the main page of the Qualtrics survey.
  9. Click Publish to save the changes to the survey.
