MiVideo: Kaltura Capture Available Memory Warnings

Environment

Kaltura Capture Desktop Recorder

Kaltura Capture is a screen recording software application for Windows and MacOS that provides a variety of recording and annotation tools. See related Kaltura Capture articles for more information about using this software.

Issue

After launching the Kaltura Capture recorder, a message appears warning memory is less than 1 or 2 GB.

Resolution

Kaltura Capture checks available RAM at the beginning of a recording and may issue a warning popup if memory is less than 1 or 2 GB.

In most cases, a 2GB warning can be safely ignored, but users who are getting a 1GB warning may experience performance issues.

How to Free Up Memory

  • Close all open software applications that are not needed for the recording.
  • Close all open browser tabs except the ones you need for the recording (open Gmail tabs can be a huge memory hog).
  • Make single source only recordings when practical (e.g. leave your webcam off and just record the screen or vice versa).
  • Rebooting your computer will flush out your RAM.

If you are still getting memory warnings, examine the machine specs to determine available RAM and background applications.

Mac

  • Click the Apple icon > About This Mac to inspect installed RAM. Computers with 4GB RAM will be the most affected.
  • Open Finder > in the menu click Go > Utilities > Activity Monitor to see how much available RAM there is and identify running apps that might be consuming a lot of RAM.

Windows

  • Windows 10: Right-click your taskbar and select Task Manager or press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open it. Click the Performance tab and select Memory in the left pane
    • If you don’t see any tabs, click More details first.
  • Click the Processes tab in Task Manager to analyze running applications that you may be able to shut down.
  • Contact your computer administrator if you are prompted to enter admin credentials to open Task Manager.
