Zoom: Request Automated Captions During a Meeting/Webinar

Environment

U-M Zoom

Issue

How can I request that the host enable automated captions for the meeting/webinar I'm in?

Resolution

  • During a Zoom meeting or webinar, click Request Captions in the bottom toolbar.
  • A request is sent to the host with a notification that appears for them in their meeting window.
  • The host will review the request and then approve or decline, as well as set the speaking language if enabled.
    • If approved, automated captions will immediately appear for the requestor and all participants/attendees.
    • If denied, the requestor will not receive a denial notification.

Hosts may choose to turn off the ability for participants to request automated captions during their meeting/webinar. If that is the case, you will not be able to request captions and should contact the host directly if this is an issue.

Note: Automated captioning is not the same as a meeting transcript. One is a live accessibility tool, while the other is the saved speech-to-text record of the meeting. Learn more about meeting transcripts and how to request them.
