Dropbox: Claim a Deactivated Team Folder

Environment

U-M Dropbox, Team Folders, MCommunity groups

Issue

  • My Dropbox Team Folder has disappeared from my account, and I received a notification that the managing MCommunity group has been deleted. How do I claim the Team Folder to prevent it from also being deleted?
  • I received a notification from ITS that my Dropbox Team Folder is missing its associated MCommunity group and that I should claim it before January 19, 2026, to prevent its deletion. How do I do that?

Resolution

Important: If you would like to use the same MCommunity group name/email to manage your Team Folder, you must re-create the group before following the steps below to claim it.

To claim a Team Folder before it is deleted:

  1. Go to the ITS Team Folder Manager tool.
  2. Click Import/Claim a Team Folder.
  3. Select the affected Team Folder from the first drop-down menu provided.
    • Notice: If you don't find the Team Folder listed as an option to claim in the ITS Team Folder Manager tool, it is likely because another owner has already claimed it. You can check if it was claimed by going to the "Dropbox Team Folders You Manage" page of the tool and searching for it. (If it's still not listed there, reach out to the ITS Service Center for assistance.)
  4. Select your school, college, or unit from the drop-down menu provided.
  5. Select the MCommunity group that you would like to use to control who has access to the Team Folder.
  6. Select I Confirm from the confirmation drop-down.
  7. Click Import Team Folder.

It may take up to 24 hours for all settings and access in the Team Folder to be updated in Dropbox.

The new process for Team Folders whose managing MCommunity group is deleted:

  • Within 24 hours of the group being deleted - Team Folder access is restricted. Members/collaborators will notice that it and its contents have disappeared from their U-M Dropbox accounts.
  • Within 90 days of the group being deleted - An owner (i.e., an owner of the deleted MCommunity group) needs to claim the Team Folder in the ITS Team Folder Manager tool before 90 days are up.
  • After 90 days of the group being deleted - The Team Folder and all its content are considered abandoned and permanently deleted.
