Environment
Annoto
MiVideo
Canvas
Annoto is now available in all Canvas courses!
Quickly turn passive course videos into engaging and interactive experiences for students using Annoto!
Annoto is an add-on to MiVideo in Canvas that allows students to collaborate within the video or audio player.
Issue
Annoto's Notifications can be enabled in two ways:
- Follow a discussion - Both instructors and students can enable notifications for individual videos.
- When following a discussion, instructors and students will receive an email notification any time new comments are added to the video or when a reply is made to one of their comments.
- Follow a course - Only instructors can enable notifications for the entire course.
- When following a course, instructors will receive an email notification any time new comments are added to a video.
Resolution
Videos must be added to the MiVideo service to use Annoto.
Follow a Discussion (Students and Teachers)
When Notifications are enabled (see next section), there are two ways to follow a video discussion (notifications are not enabled on a video by default):
- Manually enable "Follow this discussion" in the Annoto menu for this video (see below).
- Add a comment to the video and Annoto will automatically enable notifications on this video for you.
Enable/Disable "Follow this Discussion" in the Annoto Menu
- Navigate to the video.
- By default the Annoto widget is closed and can be accessed by clicking on the thought bubble.
- Open the menu by clicking the triple lines in the upper left of the Annoto widget.
- Enable/disable notifications by clicking the bell icon.
- You're following the discussion if the bell is green and not following the discussion if the bell is clear.
Disable "Followed Discussions" and/or "Replies" in the Annoto Menu
Quickly disable notifications for discussions and/or replies. This setting applies to all videos you follow.
- Navigate to the video.
- By default the Annoto widget is closed and can be accessed by clicking on the thought bubble.
- Open the menu by clicking the triple lines in the upper left of the Annoto widget.
- Click "My Space".
- Disable "Followed Discussions" and/or "Replies".
How To Enable Notifications
Instructors, TAs and designers can enable the Notifications feature.
Enable Video Comments
To enable Notifications, the Comments feature first needs to be enabled for the video, see the Annoto: Comments Engage Students In A Flipped Classroom article.
Enable Notifications at the Individual Video Level
Only specific videos in the course will have the Annoto Notifications feature enabled. Comments must be enabled on the video first.
- Navigate to the Annoto Dashboard in the course:
- From the Media Gallery
- Media Gallery > Channel Actions in the upper right > Annoto Dashboard.
- From the left course navigation
- Settings > Navigation > enable Annoto Dashboard. Note: this only has to be done once to have the navigation link appear in the course.
- Click the Annoto Dashboard link in the left course navigation.
- Click on the name of the video from the Course Videos section
- Important: If you don't see the video in this list, the video may have been published in the course prior to enabling Annoto (this can occur when importing a previous course with embedded videos). The video has to load in the player once before it will show up on the Annoto Dashboard. Navigate to the page where the video is embedded. There is no need to play the video, the player just needs to load on the page. The process is similar if the video is published in the Media Gallery. Navigate to the Media Gallery and click on the video to load the player.
- Click the Preferences icon in the upper right.
- Enable Notifications.
Enable Notifications at the Course Level
All videos in the course (including videos in the Media Gallery and embedded into course content) will have the Annoto Notifications feature enabled. Comments must be enabled at the course level first.
- From the Annoto Dashboard click the Preferences icon in the upper right.
- Enable Notifications.
How To Disable Notifications
If Notifications are disabled from Preferences in the Annoto Dashboard, instructors and students will no longer receive emails for that video (when disabled at the video level) or any video in the course (when disabled at the course level).
Follow a Course (Teachers, TAs, and Designers Only)
Quickly enable email notifications for all new comments and replies posted to all videos with comments enabled.
- From the Annoto Dashboard click the Follow this Course button in the upper right.
- The button text changes to Following.
- To disable course notifications, click the Following button again. The button text changes to Follow this Course.
