Annoto is an add-on to MiVideo in Canvas that allows students to collaborate within the video or audio player.
Issue
How to create a quiz in Canvas so students can submit a MiVideo video recording. Enabling Annoto Comments provides a way for students to annotate their video right in the video player!
-
Students can view their video from the quiz submission details screen.
- The Annoto widget loads within the player.
- Students can share their thoughts at specific points during the video.
- Instructors can view the student's video submission in Speedgrader.
- The Annoto widget loads within the player.
- Instructors can provide feedback, ask questions, and share thoughts.
- Only the instructor and student can view the comments on the video.
Resolution
- In this use case, Comments will be enabled at the course level so all videos in the course (including videos in the Media Gallery and embedded into course content) will have the Annoto Comments feature enabled.
- Instructors can enable the Comments feature by toggling the slider located on the Preferences tab of the Annoto Dashboard. See the Annoto Dashboard and Preferences article for detailed instructions.
- Annoto features enabled at the course level can be disabled for individual videos. Features enabled/disabled at the video level override features at the course level. For example, there may be videos in the course in which Comments are inappropriate, such as video quizzes. Comments can be disabled for those specific videos.
- Navigate to the Preferences tab for a specific video in the Annoto Dashboard and disable Comments. See the Annoto Dashboard and Preferences article for detailed instructions.
- The ability to enable and disable Annoto features for specific videos provide instructors complete control over how students interact with course videos.
- Important: student video submissions will appear in the Annoto Dashboard. Please be aware the Annoto data on those videos will be copied into a new course if you use Annoto's course import.
How to create the quiz
To submit a quiz using the MiVideo integration in Canvas, students will need the Rich Text Editor for a quiz question.
- Create a new quiz in Canvas.
- Select the New Quizzes quiz engine. If your default quiz engine is Classic Quizzes and you aren't prompted to select a different engine, see New Quizzes in Canvas and Quiz Engine Prompt.
- Complete the quiz details.
- Click the Build button.
- Tip: it may be helpful to add instructions for students on how to create a video and how to upload the video for the assignment.
- Create a quiz question of type Essay.
- Check Rich Content Editor. This provides students with the Rich Text Editor on the submissions page.
- Complete the other details and add additional questions as needed.
- Select the Settings tab and toggle on Restrict student result view.
- Check Show items and questions and Show student response. This allows students to view their embedded video after submitting the quiz so they can watch and add Annoto comments.
- Save & Publish the quiz.
Note: students will not be able to use the Canvas Student mobile app to submit the quiz because the Rich Text Editor in the mobile app does not include the MiVideo button. However, students can use a web browser on their mobile device.
How to grade the quiz
- The MiVideo player with Annoto widget will load in Speedgrader and can be graded as any other online submission.
- Students will be able to access their video submission and add Annoto comments as long as they can see their quiz responses. To block student access to quiz responses, the following steps need to be taken and will apply to all students assigned to the quiz:
- Edit the quiz and click the Build button.
- Select the Settings tab.
- Uncheck Show student response.
- Students will be able to view any instructor added comments unless the ability to view quiz responses is blocked.
- After grading, to share instructor added comments with students, check Show student response in the Settings tab of the quiz.
