Issue
- Why can't I create or edit Google files in Dropbox anymore?

- Why did my Google files change to Microsoft files in Dropbox?
Resolution
Dropbox has removed the ability to create, edit, and store Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides in Dropbox. Since Dropbox became available at the university, you have been able to create and edit Google files within Dropbox using the Google Drive integration, but it is no longer available as of January 12, 2024.
As of January 12, 2024:
- You can no longer create Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides in Dropbox.
- You can no longer use the Google editor to open/edit non-Google files in Dropbox.
As of January 22, 2024, all existing Google files (.gdoc, .gsheet, .gslides) have been converted to their equivalent Microsoft file formats (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx).
Notes:
- All existing sharing settings (including shared links) remained the same after the conversion.
- Remember, opening files in Dropbox opens them in Dropbox Preview. To edit a Microsoft file, you need to click Open in and select "[Word/Excel/PowerPoint] for the web."
- If you would like to create Google files in the future, please do so in Google Drive using your U-M Google account. However, keep in mind that U-M Google is not HIPAA-compliant, and PHI should not be stored there.
