MiVideo: Create Video and Audio Assignments in Canvas

Environment

Canvas
MiVideo

Issue

How to create an assignment in Canvas so students can submit a MiVideo audio or video recording.

Resolution

How to create the assignment

To submit an assignment using the MiVideo integration in Canvas, students will need the Rich Text Editor on the submissions page.

  1. Create a new Assignment in Canvas.
  2. Select Submission Type as "Online" and check "Text Entry". This provides students with the Rich Text Editor on the submissions page.
  3. Complete the rest of the assignment and save.
    • Tip: it may be helpful to add instructions for students on how to create a video and how to upload the video for the assignment.

Note: students will not be able to use the Canvas Student mobile app to submit the assignment because the Rich Text Editor in the mobile app does not include the MiVideo button. However, students can use a web browser on their mobile device.

How to grade the assignment

The MiVideo player will load in Speedgrader and can be graded as any other online submission.

Tip: try Annoto, an add-on to the MiVideo player, that provides a private discussion between you and the student right in the video player! You can provide feedback at specific points during the video, ask questions, and share thoughts. Students can reply to your comments and create their own. See the Comments Provide Private Feedback on Video Assignments article for more info.

How students submit the assignment

  1. Upload media to My Media library.
  2. Go to the assignment and click the Start Assignment button.
  3. To embed media, select the MiVideo icon in the second row of toolbar buttons in the Text Editor.
  4. Click the Embed button next to the video to submit.
  5. Click the Submit Assignment button for the assignment.
  6. Navigate back into the assignment and click on Submission Details to check the status of the submission.
