Google Account Recreation and MCommunity Group Sync

U-M Google, MCommunity groups

Issue

After a user's U-M Google account is deleted and recreated, the MCommunity groups will not automatically sync their membership with Google. There are a couple of ways to remedy this issue.

Resolution

After a user's U-M Google account is deleted and recreated, the MCommunity groups of which they were a member and/or owner will not sync their membership to Google automatically.

What this means

  • The user will still receive emails sent to the MCommunity group to their email.
  • If they were shared on any files/folders/shared drives in Google Drive via an MCommunity group, they will no longer have access to those items.
  • If they were invited to any Google Calendar events via an MCommunity group, they will no longer have access to the event in their calendar.
  • If they were shared on any Google Calendar calendars via an MCommunity group (e.g., resource calendars), they will no longer have access to those calendars.

How to fix

  • Ask an owner of their MCommunity group(s) to remove and add them back to the group.
  • Ask an owner to make any membership change to the MCommunity group (e.g., adding a new member, removing a member, etc.).
    • Note that changing a setting in the MCommunity group will not trigger the sync.
  • If they are an owner of the MCommunity group(s), ask the user to go in and make any membership change to the MCommunity group or uncheck the Member box beside their name and check the box again.

Any changes made to an MCommunity group will trigger it to sync with U-M Google. This will, in turn, allow the user to access anything in Google that was shared with them via the MCommunity group.

Additional Information

Note: After a user's U-M Google account is deleted and recreated, they will no longer have access to anything they were shared on across all Google services (e.g., Drive, Calendar, Chat, etc.). Refer to Article ID: 11703 for more information.
