Slack: Default Channels in Workspaces

Environment

U-M Slack

Issue

What are the default channels in a Slack workspace? How do I change the default channels for my workspace?

Resolution

Default channels are public channels to which new members of a workspace are added automatically upon joining. Workspace Admins can set or remove default channels for their workspace(s).

  1. Click University of Michigan at the top of the left sidebar.
  2. Hover over Tools & settings in the drop-down menu and select Workspace settings.
  3. Select the relevant workspace from the drop-down menu and click Open.
  4. Click Expand next to Default Channels in the browser window that opens.
  5. Enter the names of the channels you'd like as default channels in the field provided.
  6. Click Save.

Things to note:

  • Existing workspace members won't be automatically added to default channels when you set them.
  • Private, Slack Connect, and multi-workspace channels cannot be set as default channels.
  • Members are automatically added to the #general channel by default, and this can’t be changed.
  • Guests won’t be automatically added to default channels.
