Dropbox: Working with Data on Shared Computers

Environment

U-M Dropbox

Issue

What options are available for working with Dropbox data on a shared computer (e.g., a lab computer)?

Resolution

Dropbox cannot be used with a Shared/Departmental Account or otherwise linked with a shared local account on a computer. As such, the best way to work with Dropbox data on a shared computer is via the Dropbox website (dropbox.umich.edu) using an incognito window in Google Chrome or other private browsing window. Doing so will ensure that account information is not saved on the computer or in the browser. If the shared computer is using a domain login (i.e., uniqname), a regular browsing window can be used.

Using the Dropbox desktop app is not recommended on shared computers, as it requires a signed-in Dropbox account. It will additionally count towards an individual's Dropbox device limit
