MiVideo: Using YouTube Captions

Environment

Canvas
MiVideo Mediaspace with the latest players

Issue

How can I use the captions from YouTube for YouTube passthrough videos instead of the auto machine captions generated by MiVideo?

Resolution

Requirements:

  • Captions exist on YouTube for the video.
  • The latest MiVideo/Kaltura player. Canvas is using the latest player as well as several Mediaspaces. If you have any questions about the player used on your Mediaspace please reach out to the ITS-MiVideo team through the ITS Service Center.

With the latest Kaltura players, if a MiVideo captions file does not exist for the video, the player will automatically pull the captions directly from YouTube (if captions exist).

Since machine captions are auto generated for YouTube videos, after the captions are created edit the video and delete the captions files.

Notes:

  • Captions pulled directly from YouTube will always be present on the video and cannot be disabled in the Kaltura player.
  • Viewers do not have to be logged into YouTube or have the captions setting enabled in YouTube to view the YouTube captions in the Kaltura player.
