Use Zoom for Health at U-M for HIPAA / PHI

Issue

How do I use Zoom for video conferencing involving PHI and HIPAA regulations?

Resolution

  1. Login to zoom.umich.edu, or the Zoom Desktop Client with your Uniqname and UMICH (Level-1) password
  2. Click on your Account Profile
  3. View the Account Name
  4. Confirm that you see "umich-health"
  5. Schedule meetings, start meetings, and join meetings as needed

Additional Information

  • HIPAA-compliant use of Zoom became possible at UM as of as of April 2, 2020
  • At login time, All Michigan Medicine, University Health Service (UHS), School of Dentistry, College of Pharmacy, and School of Nursing faculty, staff, and students will be automatically directed to the appropriate HIPAA-aligned instance
  • HIPAA-aligned Zoom has settings locked
    • Cannot record to the Cloud
    • Zoom meeting reports scrub all personal information as soon as the meeting is over
    • Screen capture during a meeting is disabled (People can use the Screen Sharing option in Zoom. But Screen captures are blocked.)
    • Images cannot be sent
    • Live Transcription cannot be enabled. Other options can be found here:  https://accessibility.umich.edu/live-captioning
  • The University of Michigan has contract agreements in place with Zoom so that they will not share our data with anyone.  More information is available at: https://its.umich.edu/communication/videoconferencing/zoom/health
