Use Zoom at U-M for HIPAA / PHI

Environment

  • U-M Zoom
  • Videoconferencing involving protected health information (PHI) and HIPAA regulations
  • Faculty, staff, and students of Michigan Medicine, University Health Service (UHS), School of Dentistry, College of Pharmacy, and School of Nursing

Issue

How do I use Zoom for video conferencing involving PHI and HIPAA regulations?

Resolution

  1. Starting on January 3, 2021, U-M Zoom may be used for Protected Health Information (PHI, regulated by HIPAA). The University of Michigan has signed a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) with Zoom, which allows for this use.
  2. U-M Zoom provides appropriate security and compliance assurance that allows it to be used for teaching and learning, as well as many other use cases. Check the Zoom entries in the Sensitive Data Guide to IT Services for a list of the sensitive data types that are and are not permitted with U-M Zoom.

Additional Information

Zoom for Health was been consolidated into U-M Zoom as of January 2, 2021 at 11:00 PM. Zoom for Health no longer exists and all accounts that were in Zoom for Health are now in U-M Zoom.
