What Are Slack Lists?

Environment

U-M Slack

Issue

  • What are Slack Lists?
  • How do I use Slack Lists?
  • Where can I find more information on Slack Lists?

Resolution

Slack Lists is a task management tool built into Slack that can be used for to-dos, project tracking, goal planning, and more. Anyone eligible for U-M Slack can utilize the Slack Lists feature.

Lists are helpful for organizing work and collaborating as a team, but more dedicated project-tracking software might be necessary for more complex projects that require reporting or analytics.

Important features to note:

  • List automation that uses the Workflow Builder requires Workspace Admin permissions. This includes setting up alerts when field content changes and creating a form.
    • When you use list automation, your automation will appear in the Workflow Builder view as its own workflow. Be sure to name your automations before creating them. Otherwise, their default names will be "Untitled Form" or "Untitled Alert."
  • Adding an assignee to a list item notifies that individual via their Activity tab in Slack.
    • Slack will only notify the individual once when they are added to an item. Slack will not notify them every time an item to which they are assigned is updated.
  • You can save sorting and layout options as a "view" for anyone with access to the list to use.
    • You need edit access to save views on a list you didn't create.
  • To export a list to a CSV file, click the three-dots icon and select Download CSV.
    • You can also import a CSV file into a list. Click the New button in the top right of the Lists section in Slack and select Import a CSV.
  • Any direct or channel message in Slack can be added as an item to a list by clicking the "Add to list..." icon that appears when hovering over it.
  • Right-clicking on a list item gives you several useful options, including viewing a conversation thread attached to an item, duplicating an item, deleting an item (if you have edit access), and showing who last edited the item and when.
