Adding External Participants to Your Canvas Site

Issue

How to add an external non-University of Michigan guest with an email address to a Canvas course.

Add a Non-UM Guest using Canvas Course Manager (CCM)

Resolution

Only those with the role of Teacher, Designer, TA, or Assistant can add external guests to a Canvas course.

  1. Navigate to the course
  2. Click on the Canvas Course Manager tool in the left course navigation
    1. If the tool is not available, see the Enable External Tool (LTIs) in the Canvas article
    2. If this is your first time using the tool, you'll be prompted to Authorize it
  3. Click the Add Non‑UM Users button on the Canvas Course Manager landing page

Note: if the non-UM guest doesn't already have a U-M Canvas account, they will receive an email with instructions on selecting their Canvas login method. The options include creating a U-M Friend account or using social login (Google, Microsoft and LinkedIn). This email is not sent when the guest has been added to Canvas courses before with the same email address.
