Environment
U-M Google, Gemini, NotebookLM, AI services
Issue
- Google offers two AI services in its core Workspace for Education suite of tools: Gemini and NotebookLM.
- Can I use these services with my U-M Google account?
- Can I use the Gemini integrations in other Workspace apps (e.g., Drive, Gmail, Calendar, etc.)?
Resolution
- The Google Gemini and NotebookLM services are available to all U-M Google accounts.
- Google Gemini and NotebookLM are Core Services offered as part of our U-M Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals agreement. They are approved for use with the same types of sensitive data as other U-M Google Core Services, including FERPA.
- You cannot access the Gemini service integrations available within Drive, Gmail, Calendar, etc.
- Refer to the following knowledge articles for more detailed information on each service and its features/functionality:
- Refer to the ITS AI Services site for more general information on Google Gemini and NotebookLM at U-M.
- While you are encouraged to explore the capabilities of Gemini and NotebookLM, we also strongly encourage you to explore U-M's GenAI tools (U-M GPT, Maizey, GoBlue, etc.) as these tools provide some overlapping functionality, but with important advantages due to greater internal control over accessibility and security.
Additional Information
- Google Gemini was formerly called Google Bard.
- If you want to explore other generative AI available to U-M, visit the U-M Generative AI website to learn more.
