Google AI, Gemini, and NotebookLM Availability at U-M

Environment

U-M Google, Gemini, NotebookLM, AI services

Issue

  • Google offers two AI services in its core Workspace for Education suite of tools: Gemini and NotebookLM.
  • Can I use these services with my U-M Google account?
  • Can I use the Gemini integrations in other Workspace apps (e.g., Drive, Gmail, Calendar, etc.)?

Resolution

  • The Google Gemini and NotebookLM services are available to all University of Michigan faculty, staff (regular and temporary), and students. (Sponsored affiliates, alumni, and retirees do not have access to Gemini or NotebookLM.)
  • Google Gemini and NotebookLM are Core Services offered as part of our U-M Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals agreement. They are approved for use with the same types of sensitive data as other U-M Google Core Services, including FERPA.
  • You cannot access the Gemini service integrations available within Drive, Gmail, Calendar, etc.
  • Refer to the following knowledge articles for more detailed information on each service and its features/functionality:
  • Refer to the ITS AI Services site for more general information on Google Gemini and NotebookLM at U-M.
  • While you are encouraged to explore the capabilities of Gemini and NotebookLM, we also strongly encourage you to explore U-M's GenAI tools (U-M GPT, Maizey, GoBlue, etc.) as these tools provide some overlapping functionality, but with important advantages due to greater internal control over accessibility and security.

Additional Information

  • Google Gemini was formerly called Google Bard.
  • If you want to explore other generative AI available to U-M, visit the U-M Generative AI website to learn more.
