Google AI and Gemini Availability at U-M

Environment

Google Gemini and U-M Google Workspace accounts

Issue

  • Google Gemini (formerly Bard) is a new artificial intelligence platform created by Google. It is rapidly developing and is currently considered by Google to be experimental. Can I use it with my U-M Google account?
  • Can I use other Google AI features with my U-M Google account?

Resolution

U-M Google Workspace accounts currently do not have access to Gemini. This includes all Additional Services and features that use Gemini (e.g., NotebookLM). It is not a Core Service offered as part of our U-M Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals agreement. ITS will be sure to communicate if this changes.

If you would like to explore Gemini, please use a personal, non-university Google account and only use it with institutional data classified as LOW. Refer to https://safecomputing.umich.edu/protect-the-u/safely-use-sensitive-data/AI-and-UM-Data for a description of data classifications.

Additionally, other Google AI features are not available in the U-M Google instance.
