How to Determine the OS of a Windows Computer

Procedure

  1. Go to Software Center and search for 'Upgrade' which should then bring up the “Windows 10 Upgrade (current version)” or "Windows 11 Upgrade (current version)" application (depending on your hardware model and current OS).
  2. Click on the icon / application and then click on Install.
  3. The application should start quickly after clicking "Install", however, if it has not fully downloaded yet, you will see a percentage for the current download.  Once this reaches 100%, the upgrade process will begin.
  4. The upgrade process begins with checking for basic requirements (connection to power, hard drive space, etc.).  It will then display a welcome message and show the results of the necessary pre-flight checks.  If one of the checks has failed, the customer can attempt to fix this and then click the "Retry" button to run the checks again.  If it passes the second time, the upgrade can continue.
  5. If all checks are passed, a green check box button will appear.
  6. The customer has the option to either continue (green check), or cancel (red x).  Once the continue button has been clicked, the upgrade will continue and the computer will reboot within a few minutes.
  7. The computer will display a blue status screen with a spinning activity indicator while updating. It will reboot multiple times during the process, but eventually will return to the normal lock / login screen when the process is completed.
  8. If the upgrade fails along the way, the customer should be returned to the lock screen, but will receive an error message pop-up showing the failed step in the task sequence as well as the computer name, serial number, and model name.  This information can be helpful when contacting the ITS Service Center or other desktop support teams.
