Canvas: Gradebook (Split First and Last Name into Separate Columns)

Issue

Canvas provides instructors with the ability to split the student names in the gradebook into first and last name columns.

Resolution

To display students' full names split into first and last name columns in the gradebook:

1. Click the Gear Icon in the upper right corner of the Gradebook. 
2. Click the View Options tab
3. Click to check Split Student Names 
4. Click the Apply Settings button.
5. The Gradebook will now display two columns, Student Last Name and Student First Name.
6. Please note that Canvas still only allows the Last Name column to be sorted alphabetically.
   1. To undo this, deselect Split Student Names.

Notes:

• Canvas still only allows the Last Name column to be sorted alphabetically.
• CSV downloads of the Canvas gradebook will include LastName and FirstName columns if the Split Student Names setting is enabled.
