Spoofed Caller ID - Appears that Call is Internal to University of Michigan

Environment

University of Michigan phone service

Issue

Customers may report to ITS that they received a scam or fraudulent call, with a Caller ID making it appear to be from the University of Michigan. Those who call the number back may reach the University of Michigan.

Resolution

Fraudsters routinely fake ("spoof") the caller ID, and previous investigations have indicated that scam calls that appear to be from the University of Michigan are in fact not from U-M. Unfortunately, ITS does not have any ability to prevent fraudsters from faking caller ID data.

Advise contacts:

  • Don't trust caller ID. Phone numbers and caller identities can be faked. There have been reports of forged phone numbers from U-M, government offices, and other businesses and institutions. For additional information, see the U-M Safe Computing page:  https://www.safecomputing.umich.edu/be-aware/phone-scams
  • Those impacted can report fraudulent calls to University of Michigan Department of Public Safety and Security: dpss-safety-security@umich.edu or (734) 763-1131
