Spoofed Caller ID - Appears that Call is Internal to University of Michigan

Body

Environment

University of Michigan phone service

Issue

Customers may report to ITS that they received a scam or fraudulent call, with a Caller ID making it appear to be from the University of Michigan.

Those who call the number back may reach the University of Michigan, and assume that ITS will be able to prevent this behavior.

Resolution

ITS does not have any ability to prevent fraudsters from faking caller ID data.

Fraudsters routinely fake ("spoof") the caller ID, and previous investigations have indicated that scam calls that appear to be from the University of Michigan are in fact not from U-M.
