Export OneNote Notebooks

Environment

Microsoft Office 365

Issue

How can I download my OneNote Notebooks stored under my U-M account?

Resolution

The use of OneNote has been known to cause significant problems when you leave the university (i.e., issues with the data extraction of notes). To avoid potential data loss, ITS recommends using Google Docs instead. More information be found found here.

Please note, the OneNote export option is only available in the OneNote for Office 365, OneNote 2016, and OneNote 2013 applications. This cannot be done using OneNote for Windows 10OneNote for Mac, or OneNote for the Web.

  1. Open OneNote for Office 365, OneNote 2016, or OneNote 2013
  2. Select "File"
  3. Select "Export" from the list on the left
  4. Select "Notebook"
  5. Select "OneNote Package (*.onepkg)"
  6. Click the "Export" button
  7. Select a save location in the "Save As" window that appears and click "Save"

The OneNote for Office 365, OneNote 2016, and OneNote 2013 applications are not available on Apple or Linux computers. If you cannot access a Windows computer, then it will be best to use Virtual Sites as a work-around. More information on Virtual Sites can be found here.

Additional Information

If you do not have OneNote for Office 365, OneNote 2016, or OneNote 2013 installed, you can install it as part of the Office 365 apps. More information on how to install the Office 365 apps can be found at here.
