Export Microsoft OneNote Notebooks

Environment

Microsoft 365, Office productivity apps, OneNote

Issue

How can I download my OneNote Notebooks stored under my U-M Microsoft 365 account?

Resolution

Warning: The use of OneNote has been known to cause significant problems when you leave the university (i.e., issues with the data extraction of notes). To avoid potential data loss, ITS recommends using Google Docs instead.
  • The OneNote export option is only available in the OneNote for Office 365, OneNote 2016, and OneNote 2013 applications.
    • This cannot be done using OneNote for Windows 10, OneNote for Mac, or OneNote for the Web.
  • Additionally, the OneNote for Office 365, OneNote 2016, and OneNote 2013 applications are not available on Mac or Linux computers.
    • If you cannot access a Windows computer, then it will be best to use Virtual Sites as a workaround. More information on Virtual Sites can be found at Getting Started with Virtual Sites.

To export your OneNote notebook:

  1. Open OneNote for Office 365, OneNote 2016, or OneNote 2013.
  2. Click the File tab at the top.
  3. Click Export from the left sidebar.
  4. Select Notebook under "1. Export Current:"
  5. Select OneNote Package (*.onepkg) under "2. Select Format:"
  6. Click the Export button
  7. Select a save location in the "Save As" window that appears and click Save.

Additional Information

If you do not have OneNote for Office 365, OneNote 2016, or OneNote 2013 installed, you can install it as part of the Microsoft Office 365 productivity apps. More information on how to install the Office 365 apps can be found at Installing Office 365 Applications on Your Device.
