Dropbox Login Loop: Looks Like You Already Have An Account

Issue

You log into dropbox.umich.edu, go through the login process (including Duo two factor authentication), and are never taken into Dropbox. A window pops up that says; "Welcome to the U-M team on Dropbox: it looks like you already have an account. Please sign in to join your organization."

Resolution

The error message "Please sign in to your existing Dropbox account to join this team" generally indicates you might have an individual account registered under your U-M email address:

If this is the case, you need to login to that account using your existing Dropbox credentials, not your UMICH//SSO (Single Sign On) credentials. Once you have logged in, use the following steps:

1. Open a new web browser window in Private or Incognito mode or use a different browser you are not currently logged into. This will prevent any automatic redirection to an SSO login page in the next step
2. Navigate to dropbox.com
3. Sign-in using your existing Dropbox credentials, not your UMICH/SSO ones
4. Once successfully logged in, a prompt related to joining/being invited to a team should be shown

If you cannot remember the password, use the following steps:

1. Click Forgot your password? under the Sign in button
2. Enter the appropriate email address and Dropbox will send a password reset link to that address
3. Right-click on the "Reset Password" button inside the email and use "Copy link address"
4. Paste that link in the Incognito/Private Browsing web browser window
   1. Again, the purpose here is to ensure SSO is bypassed and clicking directly on the "Reset Password" button might open the page in the wrong browser window

After the above, you should be able to merge with U-M Dropbox or rename the account to keep the accounts separate.
