Outlook Windows Closing When Minimized

NOTICE

Please visit this knowledge article for current information about Third-Party Mail Clients or Apps and U-M Google Mail.

The ITS Collaboration Team recommends using only apps and clients created and supported by Google or web browsers to connect to U-M Google accounts. Third-party apps and clients are created by a group or company other than Google. Google does not support the use of third-party apps or incidents that might result from using them.

Environment

Windows, Microsoft Outlook

Issue

When minimizing an open Outlook window, it appears to close - it disappears and does not show up when you hover over Outlook in the task bar.

Resolution

It’s possible to set Outlook to hide its windows when minimized, which has the same appearance of the window being closed. To turn this off, do the following:

  1. When Outlook is running, there will be an Outlook icon in the Notification Area (lower-right section of the display) or in the System Tray (the ^ icon in that same section)
  2. Click on the Outlook icon to bring up the menu
  3. Toggle the option “Hide When Minimized”

The Outlook icon menu showing that Hide When Minimized does not have a checkmark next to it.
