U-M Friend accounts, Okta Sign In
Issue
How to create a new Friend account in Okta.
Resolution
- Inactive Friend accounts (those that have not signed in at least once since January 1, 2025) must create a new Friend account.
- You must sign in at least once every 12 months to keep your Friend account active.
Create a New Friend Account
- Go to accounts.it.umich.edu/friend.
- Enter your First name, Last name, and Email address.
- Click Submit.
- Check your email for a message from
IT.accounts@umich.edu and click the included link or copy and paste it into a browser tab.
Note:
- Check your spam folder if you do not see the message in your inbox.
- The link will take you to a URL that begins with
okta.umich.edu and prompt you to set up your password.
- Click Password - Set up.
- Enter a password and re-enter the password in the fields provided.
- Click Next.
Request Service Authorization
Once you’ve created a new Friend account, you must be authorized to use each desired service by the appropriate service provider. Common examples include:
Sign in with a Friend Account
Once you’ve been authorized to use a U-M service, you can complete Okta Sign In using your Friend account email address and password or email link.
Additional Information
If you previously had a U-M Friend account and need to create a new one:
- If you create the account using the same email address, you can sign in to all services you have been previously authorized for.
- If your email address has changed, see Friend Account Email Changes.
