Issue

How to create a new Friend account in Okta starting February 25, 2026.

Resolution

Starting February 25, 2026: All new Friend accounts, as well as inactive Friend accounts (those that have not signed in at least once since January 1, 2025) must create a new Friend account. 

Create a New Friend Account

  1. Navigate to the U-M Friend account (opens in new window) web page.
  2. Click Create your Friend account.
  3. Enter your First name, Last name, and Email address.
  4. Click Sign Up.
  5. Click the Email - Set up option. A message is sent to the email address entered above.
  6. Open the email message and click Verify your email

Note: Alternatively, copy the verification code in the email message. Return to the Okta Sign-in page and click Enter a verification code instead. Paste the verification code in the field provided and click Verify.

  1. Click Password - Set up.
  2. Enter a password and re-enter the password in the fields provided.
  3. Click Next.

You will receive an email notification verifying that you successfully created a Friend account.

Request Service Authorization

Once you’ve created a new Friend account, you must be authorized to use each desired service by the appropriate service provider. Common examples include:

Sign in with a Friend Account

  1. Navigate to the service you wish to sign into.
  2. Enter your Friend account Email Address and click Next.
  3. Enter your Password and click Verify.
