Dark Mode for U-M Google Docs in Chrome

Environment

Google Docs

Issue

Unlike some other Google apps, Google Docs does not have an option for Dark Mode. While some browser plugins are available, these are likely to violate U-M privacy protocols for third-party extensions.

Resolution

The only current solution is to modify every page separately.

  1. Select all text (Windows: control+a, Mac: command+a).
  2. Bring up the text color option (Windows: alt+/, then type "text color", Mac: option+/).
    1. Choose white as your text option.
  3. Bring up the page setup dialogue (File>Page Setup), and choose a black background.
  4. If you wish to toggle off some of the items surrounding the page, such as the menus, press Ctrl+Shift+F.

Repeat the process, choosing black text on a white background, to go back to the standard view.
