Issue
How to set up and use the NameCoach AI Audio feature in Canvas.
Resolution
NameCoach in Canvas has two parts:
- NameCoach Recorder where your name pronunciation uses your recorded or AI-generated name and it becomes part of your Canvas Account Profile.
- NameCoach Roster listed within each Course has options where you can listen and learn names of those enrolled in the course.
In the Canvas course, NameCoach’s AI audio feature automatically generates the pronunciation of all students' names enrolled in the course. The audio is synced as soon as the course is opened, which typically takes just a few seconds, depending on the roster size. Once the NameCoach roster is accessed, the synchronization begins, and AI-generated pronunciations are added for users who haven’t recorded their names.
- Users who have recorded their names will have a small purple check mark next to their name.
- AI-generated names will display a gray exclamation point inside a circle. This allows users to verify and confirm their pronunciation, either independently or at the instructor’s request.
For Instructors
When the NameCoach roster is accessed, the audio sync happens automatically, so instructors can begin hearing the audio without any additional steps. Intervention is only needed if the instructor has trouble hearing the audio or if they want the student to adjust their pronunciation. In such cases, the instructor can click the mail envelope icon to send a reminder email to the student, prompting them to re-record or confirm their pronunciation.
For Students
Students can hear, confirm or re-record their pronunciation either:
- In the Canvas course, using the NameCoach Recorder from their account profile.
- Directly in the NameCoach Roster from Canvas Course by clicking the "Edit My Info" button.
- Or alternatively, if students receive a reminder email to re-record their pronunciation, they can follow the provided link.
- Note that this will take them outside of Canvas, and the process for recording their name will follow a different set of steps.
- See Getting Started With NameCoach for instructions.
