Create and Manage Gmail Contact Groups

Environment

U-M Google Mail, Gmail, Google Contacts

Issue

Groups of email addresses saved as contacts in Google Contacts can be clustered together in a Label so that you may send email to the group of addresses together without entering each address separately when composing a message in Gmail.

Resolution

Create a new group

  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. On the left next to "Labels," click the + symbol for Create label.
  3. Type a name, then click Save.

Add contacts to your group

  1. Ensure that the address you are wanting to add is saved as a contact.
  2. Select one of the following:
    • A single contact: Check the box next to the contact name.
    • Multiple contacts: Check the boxes next to all the contacts you want to add.
    • All contacts: Check the box next to any contact and in the top left, click Selection Actions and then All.
  3. At the top of the list of contacts and towards the right locate the leftwards arrow icon, Manage labels.
  4. Click the group label you want to add these contacts to.
  5. Click Apply.

Email a group of contacts from Gmail

  1. Open Gmail.
  2. At the top left, click Compose.
  3. In the "To" field, start typing the group name, then select the group from the list that appears.
  4. You'll see a list of contacts in the "To" field.
