Authorize Parent/Guardian to View Student Account Information

Issue

How do I set up Friend Account access to a student account? 

This information is helpful if you see the following error message: "Wolverine Access Parent Business requires that you be authorized by one or more students to access their data. Contact the ITS Service Center if you have questions 734-764-HELP (764-4357)"

Resolution

Access Setup

The student account access is a multi-part process and must be handled by the student who owns the account.

  1. First, the parent or guardian must create a Friend Account by going to: https://friend.weblogin.umich.edu/friend/
    1. Note: If a parent wants to use their uniqname and password to log in to Parents & Family, their student will need to authorize their uniqname@umich.edu
      1. In this case, the parent does not create a Friend Account with their uniqname@umich.edu
      2. After the student authorizes the parent's uniqname@umich.edu, the parent can sign into the Weblogin page using the typical uniqname/UMICH (Level-1) password login process
  2. If you already have a uniqname, skip this set of steps
    1. Log on to Wolverine Access with Friend Account email address (through New & Prospective Student Business)
    2. Navigate to Personal Information>Parent Family Authorization
    3. Set up Parent and Family Authorization to match the email address used for the Friend Account
      1. The steps to follow are outlined on the Finance website: Parent/Family Authorization and Access
      2. Note: There is an automated email sent to the parent's authorized email asking them to set up their Friend Account
      3. That email gets sent out in nightly batches around 3am, so they may not see this right away
      4. If the parent has not yet created a Friend Account and is expecting this email to create their login, the quickest way to give them access is to go to the create link in Step 1 above 
  3. Next, you (the student) must go into your Wolverine Access account (through Student Business) 
    1. Click on Student Center > Parent/Family Authorization
    2. Set up Parent and Family Authorization to match the email address used for the Friend Account
      1. The steps to follow are outlined on the Finance website: Parent/Family Authorization and Access
      2. Note: There is an automated email sent to the parent's authorized email asking them to set up their Friend Account

Parent/Guardian View Information

If the Friend account has been properly authorized, the parent will be able to log in and view the desired information by logging in with the Friend Account. NOTE: The parent/guardian MUST use these navigation steps or they will not have access!

  1. Go to  Wolverine Access > Parents and Family
  2. Select My Student's Information
    1. Friend accounts and non-student uniqname accounts cannot access the View/Pay My Student Account or Student Business options on Wolverine Access
    2. Only student uniqname accounts have access to View/Pay My Student Account or Student Business options on Wolverine Access

Additional Information

Sometimes someone else in the household has used the computer with another UMICH login and forgotten to log out. If a parent is unable to log in after creating the Friend Account that has been authorized by their student, follow these steps:

  • Navigate to wolverineaccess.umich.edu
  • Select the Sign Out link under the person icon in the upper right hand corner
  • Confirm the Log Out
  • Sign In with Friend Account and password. Select Parents & Family>My Student's Information
  • Clearing browsing history, cookies, and cache is another way to force the account to log out
  • If the parent does not want to clear cache and cookies because they have stored multiple passwords in their browser, they can use an incognito window or  another browser where their student has not stored their credentials
  • A student is able to authorize a Friend Account even before they create a uniqname
