Slack: Use Your @umich.edu Account/Email for a Non-UM Workspace

Environment

Slack

Issue

I want to use my @umich.edu email address to sign in to/be added to a non-UM Slack workspace. Is this possible?

Resolution

  • You can use your @umich.edu email address to join external Slack workspaces outside the U-M Slack Enterprise Grid. However, it is a separate Slack account that is not associated with U-M Slack or your U-M Slack account.
  • Slack allows you to have multiple accounts using the same email address (one for U-M Slack and one for non-UM Slack).
  • It is important to note that you cannot create an external workspace with your @umich.edu email address. You can only create workspaces using your @umich.edu email within U-M Slack.
    • If you created an external workspace with your @umich.edu email address before U-M rolled out Slack to the university in August 2021, you can continue to own that workspace with your non-UM @umich.edu account.
