U-M Zoom
Issue
I want to use the HD 1080p/Group HD option in Zoom meetings for higher-quality video, but it is locked on my account. Can it be enabled?
Resolution
At this time, Group HD is unavailable for U-M Zoom accounts due to storage and bandwidth constraints. The University has a limited amount of cloud storage for Zoom recordings, which would be heavily impacted by enabling this setting and increasing recording file sizes. Furthermore, the bandwidth requirements of accounts that wish to use this feature would impact the University and personal networks. If you are looking for higher-quality video recordings, we suggest recording as a local recording rather than a cloud recording. We also recommend checking the following settings:
Improve personal camera output
- Open the Zoom Workplace desktop app.
- Click the gear icon (Settings) in the lower left corner.
- Select Video & effects from the left navigation.
- Check the HD box under the Video section if your camera hardware allows this option.
- Adjust any additional settings you prefer to augment the quality of your video output.
Configure local recording settings
- Open the Zoom Workplace desktop app.
- Click the gear icon (Settings) in the lower left corner.
- Select Recording from the left navigation.
- Click the Advanced button at the bottom.
- Toggle Optimize for third-party video editors if you plan to edit the video after the meeting/webinar.
- Adjust any additional settings you prefer to augment the quality of your video recording.
The quality of video output still largely depends on the camera equipment you have and the adjustments you've made on your end to improve it. However, these steps are best for ensuring the best quality recording for future use. If you wish to upload a local recording to share, we recommend you refer to Upload an MP4 File to MiVideo for Long-Term Hosting.
If you are looking to produce a professional-style Zoom meeting/webinar video, we also suggest reaching out to your Unit IT/AV team or Michigan Media, depending on the scope of your event.
