Zoom: Audio Transcription/Captioning for Cloud Recordings

Environment

U-M Zoom, cloud recordings

Issue

  • How do I enable audio transcription for my Zoom cloud recordings?
  • How do I view and edit an audio transcript to add captions to a cloud recording?

Resolution

Audio transcription for cloud recordings lets you add captions to a meeting or webinar recording after it has concluded. This feature only works with cloud recordings. (Hosts who want captions to download with their local recording should ensure that the Save closed caption as a VTT file setting under “Record to computer files” is enabled in their account settings.)

Enable audio transcription for cloud recordings

  1. Go to your U-M Zoom account settings.
  2. Click the Recording tab.
  3. Check the Create audio transcript box under the "Advanced cloud recording" section.
  4. Click Save.
The audio transcript will not be generated if this setting is not enabled when you record your meeting/webinar to the cloud. (You cannot retroactively apply the setting to cloud recordings that have already occurred.)

View and edit the transcript files

After recording your Zoom meeting/webinar to the cloud, you can view and edit the audio transcript from your Zoom settings. Refer to the Zoom Support page for instructions on viewing and editing your transcript.

Depending on the length of the cloud recording, the transcript may take several hours to generate. You’ll receive an email from Zoom notifying you when it is available.

To access a specific meeting/webinar's transcript:

  1. Select and open the meeting/webinar recording from under the Cloud recordings tab.
  2. Click Audio transcript - English(original). The file will download automatically. (It is not possible to download it as a different file type. Transcripts will always be in the VTT format.)

You can open and edit a VTT file using any text editor, such as Microsoft Word, Windows Notepad, Mac TextEdit, or Atom. You can also view the contents of a .VTT file by dragging it into any web browser.
