Zoom: Request a Translated Captions License

Environment

U-M Zoom

Issue

How do I request a Zoom translated captions license?

Resolution

  • Translated captions licenses are extremely limited, and availability is subject to demand. They are generally issued for up to one academic term with the option to renew but are entirely demand-dependent.
  • Ensure you have reviewed the Zoom: Additional Licenses Available at U-M article to understand what this license entails and whether it fits your needs.
    • You should not request this license type if you do not have an active academic/business need for it. Doing so prevents others with active needs from accessing the license.
  • To request a translated captions license:
    1. Go to the ITS Zoom License Manager tool.
    2. Click Translated Captions under "Request a new add-on license."
      • Note: This option will be greyed out if no licenses are available, and a message will appear stating this.
    3. Thoroughly review the information provided at the top of the form.
    4. Select which academic term this license will be used during.
    5. Check the two confirmation boxes to verify that you have reviewed all relevant information and understand the license's renewal option and demand-dependence.
    6. Click Submit request.
  • After your request is submitted, it will be automatically approved and applied to your account for the academic term you selected.
    • If you'd like to remove the license at any time, click Renew/Remove next to it in the tool, click Remove, and follow the instructions to confirm removal.
    • Renewal opens 30 days before the license expiry date. Click Renew/Remove next to it in the tool and click Renew.

Additional Information

  • If automated captions are not enabled in your Zoom account settings, you will not be able to access translated captions.
  • Note: If you have a translated captions license and are using the feature in a meeting being recorded to the cloud, the generated closed captions and audio transcript for the cloud recording will not be translated. To save a fully translated transcript, the host should manually save the meeting transcript before the meeting ends. (It will not be accessible after the meeting ends if not saved.)
