When I log into a Linux CLSE computer, I either cannot run software (e.g. command not found), or am automatically logged out. How can I fix this?

There are a few issues that can cause this behavior:

  1. If there is a problem with your Linux dotfiles (i.e. environment configuration files), your session may not be able to start properly. You can reset them by logging into a CAEN login server using SSH, and typing the following command:
    /usr/caen/bin/redot
This will rename your current dotfiles to .dotfile.old, and copy the CAEN standard dotfiles into your home directory. Once the command completes, log out and log back in again.

You can also reset your dotfiles manually using SFTP/SCP or by logging into a CAEN Windows computer.

The next time you log into a Linux computer, your environment will use the CAEN default settings, as if you were logging into a Linux computer for the first time.

  1. When you are over the quota for your CAEN Home Directory, Linux cannot write necessary session information, which can prevent you from logging in. You should check your quota, and clear out some space in order to continue. Note: For long-term storage, CAEN recommends moving larger files to U-M cloud storage services via Kumo in order to free up space.

  1. Specifically for problems running software in Linux: Many applications are restricted based on an individual's role at the College. Refer to our online Software Restrictions for Linux Users page for more information.
